Meet Our Student Interns

July 23, 2020
General

This summer and fall, we welcomed 5 new interns Carl, Oscar, Quiana, Chunyue, and Marco. Our interns come from diverse backgrounds and universities. In addition, our interns have brought unique skills in Engineering, Research and Business into the company. We have mentored them and assigned them to projects that will benefit not only the company but also complement their career goals. Our 5 interns have been a great addition to our team. Let’s get to know them!

Carl Gross
Software Engineering Intern

Where are you from?
I was born and raised in the Bay Area of Cupertino California, one of the major centers of technology in the US.

Which University are you currently attending, your major, and classification?

I am currently a freshman at Wesleyan University, and I study computer science and mathematics.

How did you come across Irys?
When looking for a summer opportunity, I came across S+S, and through this program, I was linked up with Irys. I was intrigued by the project that they had for the summer interns (building a machine learning chatbot) because one of the fields of computer science that I plan to study further about is machine learning and neural networks.

How did you become interested in your field?
From a young age, I have always been extremely interested in programming computers since my father introduced me to Java. My love of video games blossomed into a passion for the creation of video games and then into programing and software engineering in general. I love how the field of computer science is so new and vast, there are many different fields of computer science and almost all of them will inevitably play major roles in the future of our society.

What do you expect to get out of this internship?
I have not created a chatbot in the past, so this experience would undoubtedly teach me many new useful skills. I am also drawn to the fact that the bot would play a role in shaping the societies of the cities that it is deployed in. In my future career, I want to play a role in transforming society through technology.

Oscar Lopez
Business Intern

Where are you from?
I grew up in Laredo, Texas, a community on the U.S.- Border.

Which University are you currently attending, your major, and classification?
This coming Fall semester, I will be a Junior Business Honors and Government student at the University of Texas at Austin.

How did you become interested in your field?
The border of Laredo, Texas is a community like non other- a synergetic symphony of two cultures, traditions, and peoples- but it also faces myriad issues. More than 30% of Laredoans live in poverty, and in 2017 it was designated as the community with the highest percentage of citizens without a home internet access. I felt it important to bring this issue to light in Washington, and so in 2019 I served as a Google Public Policy Fellow. This past spring semester, I continued my work as a Policy Fellow at Next Century Cities where I researched the effects that the COVID-19 Pandemic has had on communities that lack broadband internet.

What do you expect to get out of this internship?
I’m excited to join the Irys team to assist in developing Irys’ products, advance Irys’ mission of better connecting citizens and government officials, and learn more about how technology can advance civic participation.

Quiana Natividad
Marketing Intern

Where are you from?
Hello, the city that I grew up in and am still in love with today is El Paso, Texas, also known as the Sun City, for not only its sunny days throughout the whole year but also for its friendly, welcoming and tight knit community.

Which University are you currently attending, your major, and classification?
Today I am a senior at Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio, Texas working towards a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration in Marketing.

How did you become interested in your field?
I come from a long line of entrepreneurs and as a child their influence has always driven me to express an interest in business. In addition, I have always shown initiative to help communities and desire to make a change. My goal is to open a business that provides social good to communities inside and outside of El Paso. Through marketing, I believe I can provide assistance to make citizens' needs known and give companies the opportunity to respond.

What do you expect to get out of this internship?
In my internship, I hope to gain new branding techniques, develop social media plans, and lastly plan and execute market research that will help communities, governments and businesses connect better with each other. Although we are currently presented with difficult times (COVID-19) I believe working with Irys is a great opportunity to demonstrate the importance of connecting communities, governments, and businesses through the use of technology.

Chunyue Ma
Software Engineering Intern

Where are you from?
I am an international student from China. I studied in Singapore for 4 years before coming to the United States for my college education.

Which University are you currently attending, your major, and classification?
I am a rising junior at Wesleyan University. I am pursuing a computer science degree as well as a linked major called college of integrative science (CIS) in which I focus on neuroscience.

How did you come across Irys?
I came across this internship opportunity last semester and I was immediately attracted by Irys’ dedication in promoting social engagement through technology! Ever since the start of my education journey I have been actively searching for opportunities to transfer my knowledge into actual social changes. Irys therefore is the company I want to explore and aspire to work at.

What do you expect to get out of this internship?
This summer, I am working on this amazing project of a chatbot service integrated with Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp to allow citizens from different cities to communicate with local government and solve issues. At Irys, I hope to put the CS skills learnt at school into real life applications and make actual impacts through the power of technology. Apart from the valuable professional growth, Irys also provides an amazingly friendly and collaborative working culture. Despite the difficulties due to COVID-19, the team members communicate with and encourage each other constantly. This internship really shows me how good it feels to be working with an inclusive and caring team.

Marco Pizarro
Software Engineering and Business Intern

Where are you from?
I am from the beautiful city of Salinas, California. Salinas is known as the Salad Bowl of the World because much of the country’s agriculture products come from the city.

Which University are you currently attending, your major, and classification?
I am currently a freshman at Stanford University majoring in Computer Science. I am looking to minor in Urban Studies.

How did you come across Irys?
I came across Irys when I saw a Forbes article about the great work Irys was doing. The work that they were doing was something that I was passionate about, so I applied!

How did you become interested in your field?
I have been passionate about creating change with technology ever since I was introduced to coding in middle school. My brief introduction to coding blossomed into years of self studying about many different languages and technologies. Eventually I was lucky enough to take Computer Science in high school as well. What really keeps me interested in the field is the thought that the things I build can have a real impact on individuals.

What do you expect to get out of this internship?
I expect to learn more about the full development lifecycle and what it is like to code in a team environment with engineers all around the world. Specifically, I am excited to work with the chatbot and on a new product in the works. I am also excited about the opportunity to be a part of the business side of the tech world.

We are delighted to have Carl, Oscar, Quiana, Chunyue, and Marco join our team.
